Whiz Kid Repeat: Old Quarry Scholastic Bowl Team Heads to State

The team will compete Friday in Bloomington, Ill., after winning both its regional and sectional competitions.

Old Quarry Middle School Scholastic Bowl Team

Whiz Kids' Names: Eighth-graders Alex Micco, Alyssa Stecyna, Justin Whitehouse, Diana Vera, Bailey Fox, Nathan Crockett; and seventh-graders Claire Gagen, Taylor Campos and Jason Hackiewicz

Whiz Kids' Ages: Grades 7 and 8

Whiz Kids' Accomplishment: On Wednesday, April 27, the team beat teams from Bolingbrook, Downers Grove, Homer Glen and Woodridge to win their Southeast DuPage Elementary Athletic Association regional tournament. On Monday, the team beat 21 other schools to become sectional champions. They now have a season record of 16-3.

Whiz Kid's Key to Awesomeness: Old Quarry Principal Bill Caron announced Monday night at the District 113A Board of Education meeting that the Scholastic Bowl team would compete for the Class AA state title Friday at Heartland Community College in Bloomington, Ill. The team will take on schools from Bloomington, Edwardsville and Springfield.

Scholastic Bowl tests students' knowledge in a number of subjects, including science, social studies, math and English. The Old Quarry team is coached by Laurie Saulys.
