Three LHS Musicians Join Top Performers at Conference in Peoria

Lemont High School's Maggie Brown, Vince Dory and Nick Dory will participate in the Illinois Music Educators Association All-State Conference next week.

Three Lemont High School students – seniors Maggie Brown (BBb contra bass clarinet), Vince Dory (Bb bass clarinet) and Nick Dory (composition) – will participate in the upcoming Illinois Music Educators Association (IMEA) All-State Conference, which will be held Jan. 23-26 at the Peoria Civic Center.

Nick Dory has already earned runner-up accolades in his category in the All-State Composition contest.

The IMEA All-State Conference attracts the top performers from across the state, and includes guest conductors, seminars and a number of concert performances. This year’s slate includes performances from renowned recording artist Theresa Anderson, the DePaul University Symphony Orchestra, the Millikin University Jazz Band and One Voice Vocal Jazz Ensemble; and the Wheaton College Symphonic Band.

Brown and Vince Dory will audition against the state’s eight other district winners in their respective instruments; those auditions will determine both into which band each places, as well as which chair each will hold within that band.

Last year Brown, who is making her second straight trip to the IMEA All-State Conference, placed in the Honors Concert Band, the top high school concert band in Illinois.

Nick Dory has tied for second in the Arranging category of the All-State Composition contest with his submission, “Swinging Pete and the Wolf.” He also took part in the IMEA All-District Jazz Festival at Lincoln-Way Central High School on Nov. 10, competing in the tenor saxophone.

Brown and Vince Dory earned their berths to the IMEA All-State Conference with their performances at the IMEA All-District Festival at West Leyden High School Nov. 17.

The IMEA All-State Concert and the IMEA Honors Concert will cap the conference on Jan. 26. The All-State Concert begins at 1 p.m. and the Honors Concert follows at 3 p.m. A $5 ticket, which can be purchased in advance or at the door, gains entry into both performances. Some winners of the composition contest will have their pieces showcased in a 3 p.m. concert on Jan. 24. All composition winners will be honored at 9:30 a.m. on Jan. 26.

The three students advanced to the IMEA All-District Festival after IMEA auditions (among up to 2,000 other students) at Sandburg High School last fall - and are members of the school’s defending state champion Honors Symphonic Band. Vince and Nick Dory are also part of
the school’s Honors Jazz Band.
