Oxbow Midwest Calcining Presents $15K Check to District 113A Foundation

The grant will be awarded to a District 113A teacher this year for use in the areas of science, technology, engineering or math.

Oxbow Midwest Calcining, a Lemont-based manufacturer, recently announced a $15,000 donation to the Lemont-Bromberek Combined School District 113A Educational Foundation.

Mayor Brian Reaves recognized corporate citizenship with an official proclamation during the April 22 village board meeting. The company also presented an official check to District 113A Foundation President Mara Tunzi.

"On behalf of the hundreds of students that your business has impacted and the countless number of staff members .... we're very, very grateful that we have such great corporate citizens in Lemont," Tunzi said.

"Oxbow believes very firmly in improving the community where our employees live and work, and one thing we feel very passionately about is education," a representative from Oxbow said during the meeting.

This year's donation will fund STEM programming in District 113A schools. Focus on STEM—an acronym for science, technology, engineering and math—refers to educational programs that focus on those areas of study. Improving STEM education has become a priority for educators and employers alike, recognizing a need to better train today’s students for high-technology careers.

This is the second donation the company has made to the foundation. Last year $10,000 donation funded the JASON Project, an online science curriculum that provides seventh-graders hands-on experience as they study space exploration. Other awards under the Oxbow STEM grant included a field trip to the Shedd Aquarium for seventh-graders and an in-school field trip for first-graders learning about rocks and minerals.
