NIU, UIC, IIT Rank Among Ugliest College Campuses: Report

Complex Art and Design ranked Northern Illinois 19th ugliest, University of Illinois Chicago 29th and Illinois Institute of Technology 34th.

Northern Illinois University, University of Illinois Chicago and the Illinois Institute of Technology have garnered a dubious honor: they're all listed among the ugliest college campuses in the country.

Complex Art and Design ranked DeKalb-based NIU 19 based on its "bland architecture and uninspiring surroundings." The Web site also said that NIU is deliberately misleading to prospective students: "It shows pictures of the castle-esque Altgeld Hall online, when most students never get the luxury of even being on that side if campus."

The website ranked the University of Illinois at Chicago 29th, citing the "mainly Brutalist style of Netsch's East Campus," which students reportedly say is "reminiscent of a prison."

The Illinois Institute of Techology in Chicago ranked 34th on the list, primarily because it doubles as an office park, according to Compex.
