Local Schools Honor 'Hometown Heroes,' Victims of Sept. 11

Lemont High School held its eighth annual Hometown Heroes event Friday night, while St. Alphonsus/St. Patrick School marked the 10th anniversary with a remembrance service during the day.

Two Lemont schools marked the 10th anniversary of 9/11 on Friday with special services and ceremonies.

Last week, the students of , 20W145 Davey Road, spent time learning about the events of Sept. 11, 2001, and reflecting upon the initiative to create a National Day of Service to honor those who lost their lives and the heroes who emerged as a result.

The school held a remembrance service Friday in which each student was challenged to "take their candle and go light the world," according to Gloria Yakes, a teacher at St. Al's/St. Pat's.

Later that evening, held its eighth annual "Hometown Heroes Night" to honor the work of Lemont's police, fire and rescue units. This year, the event also paid tribute to those who died in the 9/11 attacks.

The men and women, along with their families, were recognized during a short ceremony prior to the varsity football game.

The event was put on by Interact, a student service activity group associated with the Rotary Club of Lemont-Homer Glen.
