Principals from every Illinois high school have the opportunity to nominate one student for the award. The judges—educators and others involved in education issues or organizations—ranked applications "on the basis of activities showing achievement and leadership, grades, test scores, and a creative essay that was required to include an important character from American history, a chemical
formula and a famous quote or song lyric," according to the Chicago Tribune.

The judges selected 69 finalists from seven regions before paring it down to the all-state squad. The 10 winners will receive $2,000 college scholarships from the Chicago Tribune Foundation, which supports civic, educational, cultural and journalistic endeavors.

In addition to Dallmann, other members of the 2012 All-State Academic Team are: Decatur’s Katherine Boorstein, Fenwick’s William DeMaio, Wheaton Warrenville South’s Bradley Disbrow, Monticello’s Jacob Hanselman, Hinsdale Central’s Rebecca Lewis, Carmel’s Seamus Quilty, O’Fallon’s Sarah Russel, Crystal Lake Central’s Stuart Streit and Glenbrook North’s Stella Tu.

Dallmann was featured in the May 4 edition of the Chicago Tribune, and will be a part of the “Chicago Live!” radio program, which will record live at Chicago’s UP Comedy Club on Thursday. The program will air at 11 p.m. on Saturday, May 12, on WGN Radio (720 AM).

Dallmann has put together her pristine GPA while taking a very challenging schedule—including AP Chemistry, AP Environmental Science, AP Statistics and AP Calculus BC—but her success has not been limited to the classroom. A high honor roll student, she is a member of the National Honor Society, National English Honor Society and the Mu Alpha Theta mathematics honor society.

A former member of the school’s softball program, she has represented the school in state finals competition as a member of both the Mathletes and Worldwide Youth in Science and Engineering (WYSE) squads. Dallmann also has taken advantage of high-level academic opportunities during the summer, including the University of Illinois Aerospace Engineering Program and Purdue University’s Women in Engineering Program.

Dallmann has also found time to contribute many hours to community service activities. She serves as a tutor in the school’s Math Center, and has volunteered for organizations ranging from Feed My Starving Children and the Salvation Army, to the and , to the Will County Forest Preserve and retirement community.

Dallmann will attend the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign, and not only will be a part of the James Scholar Program for engineering, but also will be one of just 125 of the school’s freshmen to be a part of the Chancellor’s Scholar Program, which serves as the campus-wide honors program.
