Lemont's Kyra Udziela to Compete at IHSA Girls' Bowling State Finals Friday

LHS sophomore advanced to the 2013 IHSA Girls' Bowling State Finals after averaging 218.33 over six games and finishing seventh among individual bowlers at the IHSA Plainfield North Sectional.

Taking part in the state’s most rugged sectional, Lemont High School sophomore Kyra Udziela stared down some stiff competition to earn an individual berth to the IHSA Girls’ Bowling State Finals, which will be contested at Cherry Bowl in Rockford Feb. 8-9.

Udziela’s six-game pinfall of 1,310 (218.33 avg.) ranked seventh among all individuals at the IHSA Plainfield North Sectional, which was held at Echo Lanes in Morris on Feb. 2.

Udziela overcame a slow start in the morning round to finish with a 611 series (147-258-206), and after the break, she surged to a 699 series (180-261-258). She was the second-highest scorer of those bowlers whose teams did not advance to state finals competition; the top two teams from each of 12 IHSA Sectionals advance to the state finals, as do the top two individual finishers from each sectional’s non-qualifying teams and six at-large bowlers from across the state.

LHS head coach Mark Hollatz’s squad was at its best in sectional play, totaling a team score of 5,902 over six games to finish third of 18 teams in the toughest sectional in the state. Senior Amanda Kolar wasn’t far behind Udziela, totaling 1,267 (211.17 avg.) to finish 10th individually. Seniors Nora Collins (1,172; 195.33 avg.) and Lizzy Melvin (1,101; 183.50 avg.) also competed in all six games for Lemont.

Oswego East (6,582) edged runner-up Waubonsie Valley (6,530) for the IHSA Plainfield North Sectional title, with Oswego East’s Giselle Poss shooting a 1,444 (240.67 avg.) to earn the individual title. Poss is the daughter of Lemont High School District 210’s Director of Information Technology, Jim Poss. Oswego East and Waubonsie Valley each finished among the top four teams at the 2012 IHSA State Finals.

Udziela is the first Lemont student-athlete to compete at the IHSA Girls’ Bowling State Finals since Nicole Chlipala did so in 2010. The Indians have made 12 appearances in team state finals competition, including a third-place finish in 2004. The program’s best individual effort at the state finals was a fifth-place finish by Tammy Jordan in 1994.

Udziela will begin state finals competition with two three-game series on Friday; round one begins at 9:45 a.m., and round two follows at 1:30 p.m. The top 12 scoring teams after the first two rounds, as well as the top 30 scoring individuals from non-advancing teams, will advance to the second day of competition on Saturday. Round three begins at 9:30 a.m., while the final round starts at 1:15 p.m. The awards session is slated for 4 p.m. on Saturday.
