Lemont National Honor Society to Host E-Recycling Event

Lemont High School students will team up with ACME Refining on Saturday to provide residents a convenient, safe way to dispose of unwanted electronics.

The  National Honor Society will team with ACME Refining on Saturday to provide Lemont-area residents a convenient and safe way to dispose of their unwanted electronics.

An Electronic Waste Drive will be held from 9 a.m. to noon at the main entrance of Lemont High School, 800 Porter St.

National Honor Society students and ACME Refining employees will be present to provide the public an opportunity to recycle their electronics for free. Most electronics — from small kitchen appliances to computers to televisions — may be dropped off for “e-recycling.”

All items must fit in a 4-by-4 box. Refrigerators and CRT monitors will not be accepted.

Residents will fill out a general information sheet while the volunteers gather their items, making the process easy and efficient. While the recycling event is free, the National Honor Society will accept donations from local residents.

In addition to the Electronic Waste Drive on Saturday, Lemont High School students and staff will have the opportunity to bring in their unwanted electronics to the school Friday. Collection will be done before school and during lunch periods.

The event can be followed on Facebook at www.facebook.com/#!/events/157224521058521.

A new state law, Senate Bill 2106, that went into effect Jan. 1 bans all electronics from landfills and requires recycling of electronics.

The was an update to the state’s Electronic Products Recycling and Reuse Act, requiring all electronics to be recycled by a registered collector, recycler or manufacturer. Electronic items will no longer be taken away with the trash in regular bins and violating the law could lead to a $7,000 fine.
