Lemont High School Wins Second Straight SouthtownStar Cup

Lemont was honored Friday for having best overall athletic program during the 2011-2012 academic year.

For the second year in a row, the athletic program has been recognized as the best in the area by our friends in print, the SouthtownStar.

After a year of outstanding performances and state playoff appearances, the school was awarded its second straight SouthtownStar Cup, an honor bestowed on the top athletic program in the Southland for the 2011-2012 school year.

The winner is chosen based on a system that awards points for "state, regional sectional and conference success per sport, weighs those points based on the number of Southland schools participating in each sport and averages the total over the number of sports in which an individual school competes, according to the SouthtownStar website.

Lemont scored 3.836 points to finish ahead of Marist (3.366), Sandburg (3.131) and Bloom (2.894).

According to the SouthtownStar, the majority of the Indians' points came its success in the South Suburban Conference. Lemont finished first or tied for first in 12 of 23 sports. They won in football, boys and girls soccer, boys golf, girls cross country, boys and girls tennis, and wrestling. They tied in volleyball, baseball, softball and boys basketball.
