Lemont High School sets stage for 'Picnic' Nov. 1-3.

Events leading up to a neighborhood Labor Day picnic will provide more drama than expected when Lemont High School's Drama Club puts on its fall play Nov. 1-3 in the school's Performing Arts Center.

Lemont High School’s production of “Picnic” is set to run nightly Thursday through Saturday, Nov. 1, through  3. Performances will begin in the school’s Performing Arts Center at 7 p.m. each evening.

Tickets, which may be purchased at the door, cost $10 for adults and $7 for children, senior citizens and students with a valid school ID.

Playwright William Inge won the 1953 Pulitzer Prize for Drama for “Picnic,” an ironic title considering most of the play’s scenes are set on porches and none take place at the Labor Day picnic.

At the outset, Hal agrees to accompany the shy Millie to the picnic, despite his strong attraction to Millie’s sister, Madge.  As family and friends alike get ready for the picnic, Millie and Madge jockey for Hal’s attention.

A confluence of events leaves Hal alone as everyone else leaves for the picnic. Hal and Madge engage in a deep and revealing conversation that leads to a passionate evening, despite the fact that Madge is in a relationship with Hal’s college friend, Alan.

By the end of the play, one relationship is headed toward marriage, one relationship is finished, and a woman sheds security for the chance to pursue passion.

“Picnic” will be performed under the direction of Dan Franke, with Roy Nees serving as the assistant director and David Lindley in charge of set construction. Senior Will Vanderbillt will serve as the production’s student director, while sophomore Aleisse Buck is the stage manager.

Those planning to attend any performance of “Picnic” may park in the school’s parking garage or in the lot outside the Performing Arts Center; both are accessible off of Julia Street.

Lemont may host an IHSA Football Playoff game on either Friday, Nov 2, or Saturday, Nov. 3, so attendees are encouraged to plan accordingly.
