Lemont High School Lauds Students of the Month

Each month, LHS honors a student from each grade level for hard work and dedication to the school and the community. Selections rotate among the school's various departments from month to month.

Four Lemont High School students were recognized as Students of the Month at the district’s Board of Education meeting Nov.19. Included among the honorees were senior Aubrey Tally (Music); junior Joe Ziebell (Mathematics); sophomore Rogelio Delatorre (Business) and freshman Michael Petruzzi (Science).

Michael Petruzzi, Science

The Science Department named Michael Petruzzi as the Freshman Student of the Month. Michael notes that he likes many of his classes but that he most enjoys Biology Honors and Cultural Geography. Cited as an excellent student and a conscientious young man, his teachers note that he is a leader in the classroom and in athletics.

A high honor roll student, Rogelio lists Accounting I and Personal Finance as his favorite classes. He also is interested in enrolling in Accounting II next year.

His teachers are impressed with his outstanding communication, interpersonal and leadership skills, both in and out of the classroom.

He played on the varsity boys’ soccer team both as a freshman and sophomore, and serves as team captain for the Lemont Raiders U-16 team. While he has focused on soccer to this point in his career,

he intends on joining the Future Business Leaders of America next year. He plans on playing college soccer and earning a degree in either business or engineering. In his free time, he works on his soccer skills and enjoys reading.

Joe Ziebell, Mathematics

The Mathematics Department tabbed Joe Ziebell as the Junior Student of the Month. Joe, who is enrolled in Advanced Placement Calculus BC, notes that his favorite subject is math because there always is one correct answer but several ways to get there.

Described as a consistent and model student, he is a high honor roll performer who has been a member of the boys’ golf, boys’ swimming and boys’ tennis programs. A member of both Mathletes and Interact, his teachers note that he is deliberate and careful in his academic approach and is a humble and genuine student.

He plans on attending college and majoring in a subject in which he can use his math skills, with landscape architecture, engineering and mathematics all being possibilities. Joe enjoys caddying and designing and building things.

Aubree Tally, Music

Aubree Tally was chosen as the Senior Student of the Month by the Music Department. A high honor roll student, Aubree is described as a shining example of a complete musical artist, as she is involved in classes that focus on ensemble and individual work. She lists Music Unlimited, American Government and English IV Honors as her favorite classes.

Aubree is a member of the National Honor Society and National English Honor Society, and is asked to sing the National Anthem at many school events. Captain of the Speech Team, she placed third in Humorous Interpretation at the 2011 IHSA Speech State Finals. She has been cited to the IHSA Group Interpretation All-State Cast each of the last two years, and has held a primary role in the school musical each of her three years.

She was cast in the Illinois High School Theatre Festival All-State Production as a sophomore, and has participated in summer theatre intensives at the University of South Florida and Wake Forest University. She plans on pursuing a degree in musical theatre and hopes to have a performance career on Broadway or with a professional touring company. In her free time, she babysits and enjoys going to movies, volunteering, cooking, and composing and writing original music.

About the Student of the Month program

Only 32 students earn Student of the Month accolades each school year, with four individuals honored each month from October through May. Students may be selected for this prestigious honor only once in their careers at Lemont High School.

Local businessman Brad Grcevic of Edward Jones Inc. in Lemont contributes a donation each month to a charity selected by the Student of the Month award winners. This month’s winners selected Hope and Friendship Ministries to receive the donation.

An archive of previous “Student of the Month” winners may be found under the Academics tab on the district’s Web site at www.lhs210.net.
