Lemont High School Honors January Students of the Month

Each month, LHS recognizes a student from each grade level for hard work and dedication to the school and the community. Selections rotate among the school’s various departments from month to month.

Four Lemont High School students were recognized as January Students of the Month at the district’s Board of Education meeting Jan. 22. The honorees are Senior Tricia Flanagan (Special Education), Junior Paige Buschman (Guidance), Sophomore Brittney Mikrut (Driver Education) and Freshman Kelly Nolan (Health).

Tricia Flanagan, Senior (Special Education)

The Special Education Department chose Tricia Flanagan as the LHS Senior Student of the Month. Tricia is a high honor roll student who lists Culinary Arts and Human Rights & World Affairs as her favorite classes. She is involved in a range of extra-curricular activities, including girls’ cross country, girls’ track and field, Student Council, Interact and National Honor Society.

Tricia is an excellent role model to others with vision needs. She recently presented to professionals on how she uses iPad technology to help her succeed in the general education environment. Tricia consistently sets and achieves lofty goals thanks to her work ethic. She plans on attending college and entering the hospitality industry, and also hopes to travel abroad. In her free time, she enjoys reading and hanging out with friends.

Paige Buschman, Junior (Guidance)

Paige Buschman was named the Junior Student of the Month by the Guidance Department. A strong student who is highly motivated, she describes herself as a “big fan” of school and lists English III Honors, Humanities II, Anatomy & Physiology Honors and World History as her favorite courses.

She serves as Co-President of the Gay-Straight Alliance, is a member of the National Honor Society, and is a consistent high honor roll performer. Paige has been a great help as a tutor to a student who has had many absences from school.

While saying that life always is changing, Paige plans to study to become a pathologist’s assistant, but also hopes to pursue something related to her passion for English. She works part-time at the Goodwill Store, and enjoys playing acoustic guitar, writing poetry, reading and going to concerts.

Brittney Mikrut, Sophomore (Driver Education)

The Driver Education Department tabbed Brittney Mikrut as the Sophomore Student of the Month. Brittney lists Accelerated Geometry Honors, Accelerated Trigonometry Honors and Accounting I as her favorite classes. A high honor roll performer, she achieved the highest percentage in Driver Education last semester.

Brittney's teachers note she always is prepared, is very supportive of her classmates, and owns a work ethic and sense of determination that serves her well in and out of the classroom.

She has run on the girls’ cross country team, and also plays soccer for the Chicago International Soccer Club. She hopes to play soccer in college, where she will study to become an accountant. In her spare time, Brittney enjoys playing the guitar and takes singing lessons.

Kelly Nolan, Freshman (Health)

Kelly Nolan was cited as the Freshman Student of the Month by the LHS Health Department. A high honor roll student, Kelly lists English I Honors, Creative Writing and Health as her favorite classes. She is described as a hard working and conscientious student who is supportive of her classmates and works well with others.

Kelly managed the cross country team during the fall, and earned tournament MVP honors as a softball player last summer. She will strive to earn all A’s throughout high school and maintain her place on the school’s honor roll. Kelly also dreams of attending the University of Notre Dame.

In her free time, Kelly enjoys horseback riding, spending time with her friends, cooking with her mom, and attending obedience classes with her trouble-making dog.

About the Student of the Month program

Thirty-two students earn Student of the Month accolades each school year, with four individuals honored each month from October through May. Students may be selected for this prestigious honor only once in their careers at Lemont High School.

Local businessman Brad Grcevic of Edward Jones Inc. in Lemont contributes a donation each month to a charity selected by the Student of the Month award winners. This month’s winners selected Hope and Friendship Ministries to receive the donation.

An archive of previous “Student of the Month” winners may be found under the Academics tab on the district’s Web site at www.lhs210.net.

Was there ever a time when a full day was offered Jennifer? I was in kindergarten at Oakwood aboutRead More 28 years ago and even then it was half day. If you want full day Kate, St Pats/St Al's, St Cyril's, and I'm sure others are full day.
Catherine Stukel June 11, 2013 at 01:58 pm
Let's get real. It is NOT a half day. It is 2.5 hours. By the time kids into class, sing a song,Read More have a snack and pee, they are done for the day. Sorry. Calling a spade a spade on this one.

Is this question really from a teacher? Full-day kindergarTen has a lot of fillers too: they eatRead More lunch, go outside, go to the bathroom, etc. I don't think our public schools allow snacks in the classroom anyway. Any teacher would know that learning starts at home, and a teacher would know how to supplement a kindergarten curriculum.
