Help Patch Thank Lemont Educators During Teacher Appreciation Week

Have a really awesome teacher? Submit a thank you note to Patch and we'll publish it at the end of the week.

I was in sixth-grade the first time I really knew I wanted to become a writer.

It was a research paper about gun control, of all things. Most kids would cringe at the thought of a writing assignment like that, but I couldn't wait to get started.

I spent weeks pouring over books, old reports and online articles. Somehow, at age 12, I was able to form a somewhat educated opinion on gun control laws in the United States.

When I got my paper back, it had a note from my teacher, Mr. Mason. It said, "This is an exceptional report, for you have written with power. Be proud."

I never told him, but it was that very moment that I knew all I wanted to do was write. Mr. Mason and I had many talks throughout the year, and he continued to encourage me and help me develop my craft — even though I was only a kid.

So, if you're out there Mr. Mason, thank you. I'm a writer now, and you undoubtedly helped me get here.

I know that many of you or your children have teachers just like Mr. Mason — teachers that go beyond the textbooks and actually impact children's lives. We want to hear your stories.

In honor of Teacher Appreciation Week, which is observed May 1-8, Patch is asking Lemont parents and students to share stories about their teachers. Whether they helped you through a tough time, made those multiplication tables a little easier or just made school a little more enjoyable, we want to hear about it.

Be sure to include the following:

  • Your Name
  • Your Teacher's Name
  • School/Grade
  • Why Your Teacher is Awesome
  • Photos (if possible)

At the end of the week, I'll gather all of the notes I receive and post them on the site. So please join us in showing appreciation for all teachers, and email your stories to amanda@patch.com.
