From the Archives: A Glimpse Into Lemont’s History

In honor of playoff season, the Lemont Area Historical Society shares a photo of the Lemont Indians’ 1945 football team.

The Lemont Area Historical Society (LAHS) has generously offered to share photos and accompanying information with Patch readers each week, depicting people, places and things from the village’s storied past.

This week, as Lemont continues in the high school playoff football season, the historical society is featuring a picture of the 1945 Lemont Township High School Indians. Longtime Lemonters may recognize a few of the players in the photo – and we’re hoping somebody may be able to identify the unnamed player in the first row.

Members of the team are, from left, first row: Don Kaser, Marv Leffler, Ed Jeans, Gene Jones, John Zezulka and Glenn Wold; second row: Tom Laketa, Don Campbell, Ed Forzley, Rich Leffler, Bill Wanda, Ed Krass, Tom Sniegoski and Leo Burnet: and top row: Gene Burglund, Ray Herbert, BobPechnick, Len Indy, Gene Malak, Ed Krass, Cajton Zelurnis, Bill Sweringer, Milan Laketa and Coach Mike Washo.

The members of the LAHS say, “Good luck, Lemont Indians! Keep the winning tradition alive!”

Discover more about Lemont history at the historical society museum in the Old Stone Church at 306 Lemont St. The museum is open to the public and welcomes visitors. For more information, visit the LAHS web site at http://www.lemonthistorical.org/ or contact lemontahs@sbcglobal.net.

The Lemont Area Historical Society also invites readers to share their photos of Lemont’s past, to be added to the LAHS archives.

Was there ever a time when a full day was offered Jennifer? I was in kindergarten at Oakwood aboutRead More 28 years ago and even then it was half day. If you want full day Kate, St Pats/St Al's, St Cyril's, and I'm sure others are full day.

Let's get real. It is NOT a half day. It is 2.5 hours. By the time kids into class, sing a song,Read More have a snack and pee, they are done for the day. Sorry. Calling a spade a spade on this one.

Is this question really from a teacher? Full-day kindergarTen has a lot of fillers too: they eatRead More lunch, go outside, go to the bathroom, etc. I don't think our public schools allow snacks in the classroom anyway. Any teacher would know that learning starts at home, and a teacher would know how to supplement a kindergarten curriculum.
