Educational Foundation Awards $42K in Grants to District 113A Teachers

The District 113A Educational Foundation capped another successful school year last week with the announcement of its spring grant recipients.

A total of 20 grants were awarded during the 2011-12 school year to teachers in .

Eight grants totaling $17,759 were awarded in Fall 2011, and 12 grants totaling $24,651.10 were awarded this spring—bringing the total to just over $42,000.

Included among the spring recipients was teacher Megan Ehn, who was awarded the foundation’s first math/science grant from Oxbow Midwest Calcining.

In March, to the foundation to be used in the areas of science, technology, engineering or mathematics (STEM).

The District 113A Educational Foundation was founded in May 2010 after the district cut more than $3.17 million in staff and programs. Its purpose is to provide financial resources beyond the operating budget, which students and teachers may use toward educational enrichment.

In February, the foundation's second annual Pre-Bowl Bash  for the district. In October 2011, more than $25,000 was raised during the organization's .

Fall 2011 Grants ($17,759)

Weaving Looms — Third-Grade Art (Nicole Dyche, River Valley), $2,284.75

175 weaving looms, needles and loops purchased to fulfill weaving requirement of the third-grade art curriculum.

Mimio Technology and Middle School Math—A Perfect Match (Julie Hayes, Old Quarry), $3,196

Four Mimeo Teach systems were purchased for sixth and seventh grade math classes. The interactive technology allows teachers to integrate technology including audio and video clips into lessons, engaging students in new ways.

Time for Kids (Renee Christ, Old Quarry) $1176.00

Subscription to a weekly news magazine that encourages students to read. Fifth-graders will use the magazine is used during independent and guided reading to improve fluency and comprehension.

iPads for 21st Century Technology Program (Bev O'Rosco, Tammy Krauklis, River Valley), $6,231

Ten iPad 2 devices with five keypads purchased for use with third-and fourth-grade students, particularly in the Special Education and higher levels of Response to Intervention categories. Technology has been a proven tool helping students with different abilities succeed in the classroom.

World History Maps (Melissa Manajlovic, Old Quarry)  $948.20

Geography with a World Map (Melissa Manajlovic, Old Quarry) $164.64

Updated sixth-grade social studies classroom with a current set of world history maps and a political world map.

“You Wouldn’t Want to” Books (Natalie Brown, Old Quarry) $148.50

Books help students gain a deeper understanding of content related to the sixth-grade social studies curriculum.

Brains are Popping with Brain Pop (Mary Hately, River Valley), $525

Software license renewed through the 2011-2012 school year. This Internet-based program engages students at all instructional levels in a group or individual setting.

iMove Forward with iPads (Susan Antonoff, Old Quarry), $3,085

Five iPads purchased for use with fifth-grade students. Teachers incorporate iPad use in their curriculum and as a differentiation tool.
