District 210 School Board Elects Mike Shackel as New President

Shackel will take over the reins from longtime board member Beverly Marzec, who became the board's first-ever female president in 2009.

The Lemont High School District 210 Board of Education elected Mike Shackel as its new president Tuesday night.

Shackel, who was re-elected to the board last month, replaces the district's first-ever female president, Beverly Marzec, who has held the position since 2009.

During the organizational meeting, Shackel and board members Mike Kardas and George Rimbo were sworn in for four-year terms that end in 2017. All three are beginning their second terms.

Kardas, Rimbo and Shackel will continue to serve on the seven-member school board with Marzec, Pam Driscoll, Mark McMahon and Mary Tally, who were not up for reelection in 2013.

Along with the seating of the re-elected board members, the school board elected Shackel and two other officers to two-year terms. Driscoll will serve her third stint as vice president and Kardas will serve as board secretary.

Marzec, though no longer president, will continue to serve on the District 210 Board of Education, which she joined in 1991. With 22 years of service, she is board's longest-tenured female.

Only three individuals have served the board longer than Marzec: Edward Rutkowski (29 years, 1947-76), George O'Sullivan (24 years, 1953-77) and Lee Virtel (24 years, 1983-2007).
