District 113A Seeks Volunteers to Help Determine Future of Central School

Lemont-Bromberek Combined School District 113A is looking for community members to join its Central School Committee.

Officials in Lemont-Bromberek Combined School District 113A are seeking volunteers from the community to help determine the future of the closed Central School.

The committee, which met for the first time July 17, is tasked with determining the current status of the school, including necessary repairs and maintenance costs, as well as future plans to use the building.

At least two new members are needed, possibly parents or local real estate experts, said District 113A Board Member Patrick Kerrigan, who discussed the committee during the board's July 17 meeting.

Central School, located at 410 McCarthy Road, was closed in 2011 as part of a district-wide effort to reduce expenses and rebuild finances. It is the oldest school in District 113A, and housed third-, fourth- and fifth-grade students prior to its closing.

Kerrigan said the administration has already determined that Central School would need approximately $150,000 in repairs if the district was to move forward with reopening or leasing out the building.

If the school remains closed, the district will likely still need to replace the roof, Kerrigan said.

District 113A plans to put out a public notice to determine interest in leasing the school, Kerrigan said.

The next committee meeting is set for Thursday, Sept. 12. Those interested in joining the committee should email Kerrigan at pkerrigan@sd113a.org.
