Lemont-Bromberek District 113A board members approved an 8 percent property tax levy increase Dec. 17.

  • $19,574,000 in corporate and special purposes property taxes. $15.5 million for educational purposes; $2.2 million for operations and maintenance purposes; $1 million for transportation (to name a few)
  • $4,968,587 in taxes levied for debt service and public building commission leases.
Local taxes are the primary revenue source to fund district programs and services, the district previously told Patch. As part of the levy process, each fund is analyzed to determine if the revenue stream is sufficient to meet the expenditure needs.  Based upon this analysis, the district establishes the levy for the next year.

Parent Laura Reigle expressed her concern about the increase, suggesting that the board should instead abate its $1.877 million in debt service funds, to limit the impact on taxpayers. Reigle said the funds are currently surplus and sitting idle.

Board member Al Malley nixed that idea, noting those funds serve as reserves. Should funds from Cook County not come through as scheduled, Malley said the funds ensure that the district would be able to pay its debt.

The final levy is next sent to the Cook County Clerk. Each taxing district is required by law to file its levy on or before the last Tuesday in December. The tax levy represents the amount of revenue each taxing body is requesting to collect from local property taxes.

Portions of District 113A are located in both Cook and DuPage counties.
