District 113A Educational Foundation Awards $34K in Grants

The foundation recently awarded 24 grants for the 2013-14 school year.

The Lemont-Bromberek Combined School District 113A Educational Foundation recently awarded 24 grants totalling more than $34,000 for the 2013-2014 school year.

Grant awards were selected from 26 proposals submitted by district faculty. All three schools in the district were awarded grants funded in part by a $5,000 Grant Underwriter donation from John Piazza Country Financial and a $15,000 Grant Underwriter donation from Oxbow Midwest Calcining. Additional funding was provided by local businesses, individual donors and fundraising events.

Since establishing in 2010, the Foundation has awarded more than $100,000 in grants to benefit students of School District 113A.

The School District 113A Educational Foundation provides financial resources to support education, innovation and enrichment in pursuit of academic excellence for the District 113A community. The Foundation provides funds beyond the normal operating budget of the school district for specific educational programs and activities for students and staff. “Bookflix Online Book Program”

$1,300 awarded to Lori Villasenor

This program will provide all Oakwood School students access to hundreds of interactive fiction and nonfiction books. The online resource pairs classic video storybooks with related nonfiction eBooks to reinforce early reading skills and build a love of reading and learning.

“Elmo Goes to Reading”

$590 awarded to Ann Walker

An Elmo document camera will be used with 6th, 7th and 8th grade students at Old Quarry Middle School reading below grade level to improve reading comprehension and critical thinking skills.

“The Influence of Music in Physical Education”

$400 awarded to Ken Mehl, Nancy Malnar and Denise Ciciura

An iPod and sound system will create a motivating learning environment for over 1,000 children in grades 1-4.

“Literacy Comes to Life”

$1,780 awarded to Bridget Esposito

Interactive Graphic Organizers and Language Adventures Quiz Interactive Game Show software will supplement writing lessons for 250 3rd-graders at River  Valley School. High Interest Nonfiction text sets will enhance guided reading with a variety of text types focused on a central concept.

“iPads Lead the way to 21st Century Learning”

$3,130 awarded to Cathy Cortez and Kim Feltz

Third grade and fourth grade classrooms will integrate iPad technology into daily classroom lessons using them as tools for research and interactive learning.

“Creating a Domino Effect of Learning”

$890 awarded to Judy Lulek

Math game guides will help 4th grade teachers reinforce math concepts using domino sets. Sets will be purchased for each class, making the program available to 250 students.

“Time for Kids”

$1,751 awarded to Sue Scott and $1,223.00 awarded to Susan Antonoff

Weekly current events magazine for 1st, 2nd and 5th grades.

“Calliope: Exploring World History”

$1,026 awarded to Melissa Manojlovic

History and geography magazine subscription for 6th-grade social studies classes.

“Brains are Popping with Brain Pop”

$1,650 awarded to Mary Hately, Sue Scott and Wendy Berner

All Oakwood and River Valley students will benefit from this online softward license that includes videos, interactive lessons and quizzes across subject areas. The program can be accessed via iPads and Netbook computers and is compatible with the Mimio smart board technology.

“Carts for Art”

$762.50 awarded to Jean Dorrance

Additional storage and drying racks for Old Quarry Middle School art classes.

“Junior Scholastic Magazine”

$735 awarded to Michelle Nevin and Cyndi Picciola.

Current events magazine subscription to supplement 7th grade social studies lessons and improve informational text reading skills.

“iPads in the Classroom”

$2,788 awarded to Dana Pitlik

iPads will be used as tools for learning science concepts and for differentiated literacy lessons in 5th grade classrooms.

TREP Membership

$450 awarded to Dr. Mary Gricus

The Three Rivers Education Partnership (TREP) provides training opportunities for local teachers. TREP is funded and operated by members of the Three Rivers Manufacturers Association.

The following grants were funded by the Oxbow STEM Grant, which promotes interest and skills in the areas of science, technology, engineering and math.

High-Touch High-Tech Workshop

$1,620 awarded to Renee Steffen

This in-school field trip brings scientists to the students to reinforce concepts in the 3rd grade science curriculum through interactive presentations.

STEM Reading Classrooms

$900 awarded to Sonya Raymond

The new standards for science and literacy instruction focus on reading and understanding informational text. New books for all the 4th grade classroom libraries will help reinforce that concept while building interest in STEM careers.

“Nature Mapping: Discovering More about Where we Live”

$5,425 awarded to Sonya Raymond

This multi-media curriculum teaches 4th grade students the process of scientific inquiry. Students will study local organisms using observation, data collection and analytical techniques. Students will use field guides and access the internet using iPad Minis to research their observations and document their findings. A classroom digital microscope will help the class investigate discoveries, and GPS devices will be used to track locations of data collection.

“The Power of Place Value”

$688 awarded to Bridget Esposito

Interactive software and board games will reinforce the concepts of place value and addition and subtraction with large numbers for 250 3rd grade students.

“Hands-On Equations”

$2,835 awarded to Judy Lulek

This engaging program uses hands-on game-like activities to demystify algebra for 4th grade students.

“Science World”

$427 awarded to Laura Rickerson and Meg Ehn

Science World magazine provides a reliable source of cutting edge information supplemented by additional online features to reinforce science concepts and improve reading and writing skills of 7th-graders.

“Exploring How Life has Changed Over Time at the Shedd Aquarium”

$3,405 awarded to Laura Rickerson and Meg Ehn

260 7th-graders will travel to the Shedd Aquarium to explore how life on earth has changed over time. Students will experience a dissection class and special exhibits as part of the trip.

“JASON Project”

$480 awarded to Meg Ehn, Laura Rickerson, Melissa Janda and Shquip Osmani

The online JASON Project curriculum includes video introductions to concepts and “expeditions” that involve hands-on labs. The 260 7th grade students will use the program to explore astronomy and motion and forces units. The ecology unit will be used by 292 8th grade students.

“Increasing our ‘App’titude”

$2,052 awarded to Michelle Nevin, Laura Rickerson, Meg Ehn and Patrick Casey

Four classroom iPads will be used to enrich science and social studies lessons at Old Quarry Middle School.

“Ipods—Music and More!"

$258 awarded to Adrienne Landgrave

Kindergarteners will integrate technology into math and science lessons and listen to related podcasts during listening centers. The class will also use the iPod and speakers for music and movement lessons.
