Village Officials: Blizzard Cleanup Nearly Complete

As of Thursday morning, all main roads, side streets have been cleared. Odd/even parking restrictions still in effect.

After more than 40 consecutive hours of cleanup efforts from the Tuesday night, Lemont Public Works has cleared all major roads and side streets, village officials said.

The third biggest winter storm in Chicago history dumped more than a foot of snow on the Village of Lemont, but it only took Public Works crews 24 hours to dig out the majority of the village's snowed-in residents, said Village Administrator Ben Wehmeier.

As of 10 a.m. Thursday, all side streets were open, Wehmeier said. About 80 percent of the alleys are clear, with the remainder to be plowed by the end of the day.

"Village staff as a whole did a great job — from Public Works to Police to Emergency Management Staff to other support folks," Wehmeier said. "This was the third biggest storm in history and most of the town was in passable conditions within 24 hours. Staff will continue clean up efforts to further improve conditions."

Although blizzard cleanup is the main priority for Lemont Public Works, crews have also had to deal with two water main breaks in the past 12 hours — one on Cherokee Place behind Lemont Lanes and one near the intersection of Warner and Weimer avenues. The pipe on Warner has been fixed, but work on Cherokee is ongoing, Wehmeier said.
