High Water Levels Delay Des Plaines River Study

U.S. Geological Survey planned to dye river red Aug. 2-5.

A study that the Des Plaines River has been canceled due to high water levels, government officials announced Friday.

Scientists from the United States Geological Survey planned to perform a dye test on the Des Plaines River and the Chicago Sanitary and Ship Cana between Route 83 and the Lemont area.

The study, which was supposed to take place Aug. 2-5, was designed to determine locations where water from the Des Plaines River may be moving into the canal, and is part of a larger study on the potential of Asian carp eggs and other invasive species to migrate to Lake Michigan, according to a release.

However, high water levels caused by several days of showers and thunderstorms have forced scientists to delay their research, the release stated.

Scientists will reschedule the study within the next few months.
