The was recently awarded a grant from the state of Illinois to improve speed enforcement for commercial vehicles.
Traffic safety coordinator Sgt. Joseph Miller said the grant will allow the department to hire back officers specifically to enforce traffic safety laws over and above regular patrol.
The purpose of the special enforcement is to reduce speed and speed-related crashes involving commercial motor vehicles, according to a news release.
Lemont police must use the funding between now and June 30, Miller said.
The grant is funded by the United States Department of Transportation's National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, and is administered by the Illinois Department of Transportation's Division of Traffic Safety.
