Small Fire Breaks Out in Vacant Downtown Building

The fire was reported around 4 a.m. Friday by a Lemont police officer.

A small fire broke out Friday morning in a vacant building near downtown Lemont, officials said.

The Lemont Fire Protection District responded around 4 a.m. to a two-story building, located at 211 Illinois St. The fire was reported by a police officer passing by, according to Lemont Fire Chief Carl Churulo.

When firefighters arrived, smoke could be seen coming from the building, which is marked as uninhabitable, he said. There were no injuries reported.

According to Churulo, a chair was on fire inside the building, but the cause was unclear.

Investigators were still on the scene as of 6 a.m.
