Police: Reported Body in Canal Was Actually Mannequin

A passerby reported a possible human body in the I&M Canal around 4:30 p.m. Friday.

A reported body in the Illinois and Michigan Canal on Friday turned out to be nothing more than a mannequin, Lemont officials said.

The and responded around 4:30 p.m. to a call from a passerby who reported a possible human body in the I&M Canal near the in downtown Lemont, according to Lemont Police Chief Kevin Shaughnessy.

When police and firefighters pulled the "body" from the canal, however, they found nothing more than a pair of coveralls with mannequin arms attached, said Battalion Chief Dave Slivinski.

"The passerby had a legitimate reason to call, because it did look like a human body floating in the water," Slivinski said. "However, this appears to be nothing more than a sick practical joke."
