When walking at night, stick to well-lit and well-trafficked areas. Avoid walking through parking lots, alleys, parks or other isolated areas. Stay in the center of the sidewalk, away from doorways or bushes or the roadway.

Walk with an air or purpose and keep alert to what is going on around you. Do not wear ear buds, which make it hard to hear someone’s approach. Never go near a vehicle being driven by someone you do not know, especially when alone.

Make sure you tell someone before you leave where you are going, the route you will take and when you will return.
