Oswego Toddler Dies From Injuries Suffered in Van, Bus Accident

An Oswego toddler who was seriously injured in an has died, the Cook County Medical Examiner’s Office confirmed Monday morning.

Jada Akyea, 23 months old, was being treated for her injuries at Loyola Medical Center, but died at 10:45 p.m. Sunday, according to the Cook County Medical Examiner’s Office.

The body had not yet been released because the child was an organ donor, the Medical Examiner’s Office said. Officials at Loyola Hospital would not comment. 

The child was flown to Loyola Medical Center on April 23 after the van she was riding in was involved in a collision with an Indian Prairie School District 204 bus.

said that based on preliminary investigation Genevieve Hanson, 36, of Oswego, was driving the van south on 248th Street when she tried to avoid hitting a vehicle in front of her turning left onto Lapp Lane. Hanson entered oncoming traffic in the northbound lane and was hit by the school bus—driven by Ronald Zabilka, 56, of —as it was heading north, police said.

The van rolled after being hit, landing on its roof, and the occupants were stuck inside, police have said. Hanson's 4 ½-year-old boy and 23-month-old daughter also were riding in the van, police said. The girl was airlifted from the accident scene to Loyola Medical Center.  

Zabilka sustained non-life-threatening injuries after driving up an embankment, District 204 Director of Operations Karla Zozulia said.

Naperville Police Sgt. Lee Martin said Monday afternoon that the police department is waiting for the results of toxicology tests, which may take four to six weeks. Both drivers were given tests, he said. The department is also working to complete interviews as part of its investigation.
