Police: Downers Grove Duo Caught Driving Stolen Car after Evading Roadside Check in Lemont

Two Downers Grove men are facing felony vehicle theft charges after being caught driving a stolen vehicle in Lemont, police said.

Vidmantas Karla, 45, and Virginijus Karla, 25, both of the 1100 block of Woodcrest Lane, were arrested around 2 a.m. in the 13600 block of Archer Avenue in Homer Glen, police said.

Lemont Police Detective Aras Jonakis said the department was conducting a roadside safety check in the 13400 block of Archer Avenue when a car driven by Virginijus Karla approached. Upon pulling into the checkpoint, the car made a sudden U-turn and drove away from the scene, Jonakis said.

Officers immediately pursued the car, which pulled over two blocks from the checkpoint, Jonakis said.

After checking the vehicle registration, officers discovered the car had been stolen from Northfield and the registration had been stolen from Naperville, Jonakis said.

Virginijus and Vidmantas Karla, the passenger, were taken into custody and charged with felony vehicle theft conspiracy, police said.

Dude Just Wants Bananas

Police received a complaint at 7:52 a.m. about a man “panhandling and harassing people” at the entrance to Trader Joe's. Officers found that the man was just loudly talking to himself and waiting for the store to open so he could buy bananas.

Wrong House, Wrong Town, Pretty Drunk

A resident of the 800 block of South Madison Avenue reported that an intoxicated man walked in through her back door because he thought he lived in the house. A 42-year-old Chicago man was located and driven to a bus station.

It's the "FBI," Can We Use Your Yard?

A resident reported receiving a phone call at 10:07 a.m. from someone purporting to be the FBI, advising of a supposed string of robberies and asking to put up “some kind of sign” in the resident’s yard. The resident hung up on the call. Police entered the incident as a matter of record.

CLARENDON HILLS

Wooden Posts Stolen from Lions Club

Six wooden posts worth an estimated $600 were taken from the Clarendon Hills Lions Club property in the 100 block of Byrd Court sometime during the weekend of Nov. 16 to Nov. 18, police said.

The posts are six- to eight-feet long and used for the club's Christmas display. Police said the area was fenced off during the above time period. There are no suspects at this time.
