Lockport Man Accused of Beating Sleeping Boy with Shovel in Lemont

Nathan Hiatt, 29, of Lockport, has been charged with two counts of felony aggravated battery after he allegedly beat a sleeping 10-year-old boy in unincorporated Lemont on July 6.

A 29-year-old Lockport man is accused of attacking a sleeping 10-year-old boy and his father following a party in unincorporated Lemont on Friday, police said.

Nathan Hiatt, 29, struck the boy with a shovel around 1 a.m. Saturday in a home in the 15100 block of 131st Street, according to the Cook County Sheriff's office.

The boy's 36-year-old father awoke to the child’s screams, and when he shielded the boy from the blows, the father was hit as well. Hiatt then ran out the back door, police said.

The homeowner awoke to the noise, saw blood, and called 9-1-1. Sheriff’s police responded within minutes and located Hiatt in the yard, under a tree.

The man and his son were treated at an area hospital for their injuries and were later released, authorities said.

Cook County detectives said the victims and Hiatt attended a get together hosted by the homeowner on Friday afternoon, but it was unclear what motivated the attack.

Hiatt was arrested and charged Saturday with two counts of felony aggravated battery. As of Monday afternoon, Hiatt remains in custody in Cook County Jail on $250,000 bond.

Hiatt's next court appearance is scheduled for Tuesday at the Bridgeview Courthouse.
