Lemont Police Warn Residents of IRS Phone Scam

Beware: That's not really the IRS calling.

Lemont police are cautioning residents about a phone scam spreading across the country.

Over 20,000 complaints have been received nationwide in the last few days. During these cases, the scammer told the victim that they owe a large sum of money to the IRS and says if it is not paid, they will be arrested, according to police

Caller ID phone may show the caller is the IRS or another official government agency.

"These calls are not legitimate," Police Chief Kevin Shaughnessy warned residents in an alert. "The IRS does not contact you by phone to demand payments. If you receive this type of call, please hang up immediately and contact your local police agency immediately to report the incident."
