Lemont Police Report String of Car Burglaries

Lemont Police Chief Kevin Shaughnessy issued a crime alert Wednesday afternoon, warning residents that the department has received an increased amount of car burglary reports in recent weeks. The incidents involve broken windows, as well as stolen purses or valuables.

Most of the crimes have occurred between 2 p.m. and 7 p.m. in commercial areas along 127th Street, State Street and Derby Road, Shaughnessy said.

At least three incidents were included in Lemont police reports between Dec. 20 and Jan. 2.

On Dec. 20, an unknown person broke a window of a vehicle in the 12300 block of Derby Road between 2:15 p.m. and 4:15 p.m., according to reports. Around 3:40 p.m. the same day, an individual broke the window of a car in the 1200 block of State Street and stole a purse.

On Jan. 2, an individual broke into a vehicle in the 1100 block of State Street between 2:30 p.m. and 3:10 p.m. A purse containing money, multiple credit cards and a driver's license was stolen, police said.

"Residents are urged to place all valuables in their trunk when (their vehicles are) unattended," Shaughnessy said. "Visible purses are primary targets for thieves."
