Lemont Police Raise $6,900 for Special Olympics During 'Cop on Rooftop'

Lemont raised the third highest amount in Illinois during the Law Enforcement Torch Run fundraiser in May.

Lemont police raised $6,900—a department record—during its annual Cop on the Roof Top fundraiser for Special Olympics Illinois in May.

The Lemont Police Department finished with the third highest amount in the state during the event, which heightens awareness and raises money for the Law Enforcement Torch Run.

There were more than 150 participating law enforcement agencies statewide, according to Lemont Police Chief Kevin Shaughnessy.

"The generosity displayed by each individual that donated was overwhelming and their kindness was truly appreciated," Shaughnessy said. "I would also like to thank the police officers, staff and volunteers for assisting with this event."

This year's "Cop on Top" fundraiser was held at Dunkin' Donuts, 1106 S. State St. in Lemont. 

The Cop on Rooftop fundraiser has grown considerably since it begain in 2003. That year, 12 police departments participated and raised $20,000.

The Illinois Law Enforcement Torch Run was founded in 1986, and has since raised more than $25 million while raising awareness for Special Olympics Illinois athletes.

Special Olympics Illinois is a non-profit organization offering year-round training and competition in 19 sports for nearly 21,000 athletes with intellectual disabilities and more than 6,000 young athletes ages 2-7 with and without intellectual disabilities. The first Special Olympics games were held at Soldier Field in July, 1968.

Today, the program now is in more than 170 countries.
