Lemont Police Cracking Down on Motorists During Super Bowl Weekend

Sports fans are encouraged to celebrate safely on Sunday, as officer will conduct special patrols throughout the village.

The is urging sports fans to celebrate safely this weekend as they gear up for football's biggest game of the year.

Lemont Police Chief Kevin Shaughnessy announced Jan. 28 that the department would be conducting special patrols throughout in an effort to crack down on impaired drivers.

"Super Bowl weekend can be a deadly and dangerous time because of impaired driving," Shaughnessy said. "That's why we will increase patrols and establish roadside safety checks to catch and arrest anyone who is driving while impaired."

Individuals who choose to drink during Sunday's game should designate a sober drive, Shaughnessy said. Lemont Police offer the following tips to avoid impaired driving:

  • Call a taxi, use mass transit or call a sober friend or family member to get you home safely.
  • Report impaired drivers to law enforcement.
  • Spend the night where the activity is being held and sleep it off.
  • Always buckle up — it's your best defense against an impaired driver.

"We will show zero tolerance for impaired drivers," Shaughnessy said. "So remember, designate a sober driver before the party begins."
