The was chosen earlier this month as a recipient of federal funding for fire prevention and research, U.S. Sen. Dick Durbin (D-IL) announced.

The Federal Emergency Management Agency, which is part of the Department of Homeland Security, awarded a total of $1,013,069 to two organizations in Illinois through the Assistance to Firefighters Grant. The program is aimed toward fire prevention and research, according to a press release.

Receiving the largest portion of grant money was the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, which was awarded $999,569 for firefighter safety research and development.

"Our nation's firefighters are called upon day after day to protect America's citizens," Durbin said in the release. "As these brave men and women put themselves in harm's way, we must ensure that they are equipped with the best tools and knowledge possible to do their jobs well, and the grants will help meet that goal."
