Downed Power Line Near Bambrick Park Sparks Small Fire, Outages

A ComEd line fell to the ground, and was possibly the ignition source for a leaking pipeline, according to Fire Chief Carl Churulo.

A downed power line near Lemont's Bambrick Park ignited a small fire on a leaking natural gas pipeline Monday, officials said.

The Lemont Fire Protection District responded around 11 a.m. to the park, located at 1330 Smith Road, after a ComEd line fell to the ground, according to Lemont Fire Chief Carl Churulo.

The downed line was a possible ignition source for a leaking pipeline, causing a small fire on the side of the road, Churulo said.

Firefighters stood by for six hours, keeping the wooden ComEd pole wet to prevent the fire from spreading, he said.

Resident Louise Kickels reported on the Lemont Patch Facebook page that the incident caused power outages in nearby neighborhoods.

"I live across the street from Bambrick and at 11 yesterday morning there were four strange whooshing noises, the power went out then a bunch of sirens," she wrote. "Power was out for 13 hours over here too."
