Darien Woman Killed Monday Morning on Route 83 in Unincorporated Lemont

Woman was a passenger in a car driven by her husband on Route 83 near Archer Avenue in unincorporated Lemont when their car struck a gravel truck from behind, police say.

At about 6:10 a.m. Monday, a husband and wife driving southbound on Route 83 near the Cal Sag Canal bridge ran into the back of a gravel truck that had slowed for a stoplight up ahead, according to Frank Bilecki of the Cook County Sheriff’s Department.

Antonia Lim, 74, of the 700 block of 71st St. in Darien, was pronounced dead later Monday morning at Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn. Her 78-year-old husband, Santos, who was driving the 2011 Toyota Camry, was transported to Silver Cross Hospital in New Lenox in stable condition.

According to Bilecki, the intial police investigation indicates Lim was driving his wife to work at a hospital in Blue Island when the accident occurred.

“There did not appear to be any skid marks,” Bilecki said. “When you approach from where they were approaching, there is a slight incline – and they might have seen taillights up at the top of the hill, but may not have seen the stopped truck until it was too late. The speed limit there is 45 miles per hour.”

Bilecki added the accident does not appear to be weather related.

Both southbound lanes and one northbound lane of Route 83 were closed Monday morning while the sheriff’s department conducted its investigation. All lanes were reopened at approximately10:30 a.m., Bilecki said.

This is the second fatal accident to occur on Route 83 in unincorporated Lemont in the past week. On Wednesday, one person was killed and two critically injured in an accident that took place south of Bluff Road on southbound Route 83 in DuPage County.
