Darien Police Charge Lemont Woman with Cocaine Possession

Another driver called police to report her erratic driving on Interstate 55, police said.

A Lemont woman was charged with cocaine possession last week after Darien police said they pulled her over in connection with speeding and driving erratically near Cass Avenue and Interstate 55.

Another driver followed Amelia Espericueta, 52, of the 00W500 block of South Frontage Road in Lemont, and called police around 2:30 a.m. March 30 to report her swerving while driving on Interstate 55, police said.

Espericueta admitted to police that she had been drinking and that the cocaine belonged to her, according to the report. She had open containers of alcohol in both the front and back seat of the car, police said.

In addition to cocaine possession, police said Espericueta was also charged with driving under the influence, illegal transportation of alcohol, operating an uninsured motor vehicle and speeding.

Cocaine possession is a Class 4 felony punishable by as much as three years in jail and a fine of as much as $25,000.

Espericueta was released from DuPage County Jail after posting bond Friday. She is scheduled to appear in DuPage County Circuit Court May 2.
