TRIBUNE reports: “Residents denied referendum…”

The CHICAGO TRIBUNE today carried a story by reporters Angie Leventis Lourgos and Joseph Ryan entitled “They want vote but won’t get it”.  Subtitled, “Lemont residents fear sports complex will be a burden”, the article documents the effort by citizens to secure a public referendum on a controversial plan by the village government to borrow over $21 million plus interest to construct a rental sports complex on now polluted property lying north of downtown and leased from its current owner, the Metropolitan Water Reclamation District.

The reporters interviewed members of the “Let Us Vote” coalition who led the referendum petition drive, as well as other village residents and officials for the story.  Comparisons were drawn with projects that were initiated in other towns.  Expert opinion was also included in the article.

The online edition of the TRIBUNE carried the headline: “Residents denied referendum despite having enough signatures”
