Lemont Village Board and Mayor go Rouge.

It's somewhat amusing to see how some members of the public are so very ignorant of how our representative form of government is actually supposed to work. The fact that the village board members and the mayor, in virtual secrecy, concocted and passed a plan that could obligate we taxpayers to be responsible for $21 million principle plus $13 million in interest to build an unasked for soccer complex on contaminated brownfield owned by the MWRD next to the open air sewer, aka the Sanitary and  Ship Canal apparently does not trouble some vocal, ill informed, individuals. They seem to buy into the fallacy proffered by the gang of six and the mayor, that once elected, they may do what they like. Their arrogant response that if you don't like what we do, then run against us is not how our form of government - a representative Democracy - is supposed to operate. Actually, once elected, it is their duty to ascertain how the majority of voters whom they represent would vote if given the opportunity. They are not supposed to act like "free agents" that can do what they like until the next election - thumbing their noses at any expression of voter dissatisfaction until then. The idea that 16,600 Lemonters have to accept the dictates of 6 board members is unconscionable regarding liability for over $34 million. After numerous meetings over the last year where the main demand made of the village board and the mayor was to merely let Lemonters vote on this secretive, very risky scheme, as well as a petition signed by 1,700 Lemonters demanding the same, their response is the same as when the public first heard about it: we're going to do this whether you like it or not! Having had to sit through Poly Sci 101 and 102 in college, and, more importantly, having served in the US Army for three years in defense of our people and our form of government, to see the blatant dishonoring of their duty and their arrogant defense of their conduct is infuriating to me. It should be the same for all of you as well. Don't let them get away with this hair brained scheme!!!

Or the attorney general. Only thing there, is these organizations have a higher threshold than these web entertainment pages. They are sticklers for facts, evidence, legal wording.... Stuff like that.

Hank Olenick January 19, 2014 at 01:41 AM Since marijuana is grown hydroponically...sound like a fantastic idea for the brownfield , $21 million sports failure proposed for ghost town . ------- Just so you know where your spokesperson is coming from! $100million bridge to nowhere, better idea for our community-- Pot farm better idea for our community I wonder what he's smoking over there, oh no wait, I just figured it out
Judy January 19, 2014 at 09:47 AM
Although these comments are informative, enlightening and amusing at times, can we cut through all the minutia? Let us not, as a village, live by the now infamous saying, "We have to pass the bill to see what's in it"! We all know where those wise words have led us. Let us know every detail of this sports complex. If it is good, bad or somewhere in between we deserve to know it all. Then give the citizenry of this village time to do their homework and check everything out. We are an astute electorate, and with $21 million + on the line, I think we deserve that opportunity. Most of all Let Us Vote. Thank you.
Victor Fischer January 19, 2014 at 12:11 PM
B.S., Since you seem to be so knowledgeable and have all the answers, why aren't you on the board, and point us in the right direction?
B.S. Buster January 19, 2014 at 12:25 PM
The question is why don't you people who disagree with them and hurl unfounded allegations run against them, instead of trying to hijack control away from the elected officials acting in their official capacity? Of course there's also the courts, states attorney, attorney general..... Oh yeah they want facts and evidence not just opinion
Victor Fischer January 19, 2014 at 12:38 PM
There you go again. Never a straight answer. You always have to answer a question directed at you with another question. You have to be a politician.
B.S. Buster January 19, 2014 at 12:44 PM
Now Victor, I don't really have an answer as to why I don't run against people I don't disagree with.....but I do have a valid question as to why people who very vocally disagree with the politicians don't run against them..... Thanks for the vote of confidence on my political skill set!
Time January 19, 2014 at 12:46 PM
B.S. for someone that does this for entertainment, sure seems to be very angry.
B.S. Buster January 19, 2014 at 12:51 PM
Not at all. Quite amused. Wouldn't anger be something along the lines of unfounded allegations, conspiracy theories, threats of legal and political actions....? It's clear who's angry to me, but that's just one mans opinion!
Victor Fischer January 19, 2014 at 12:55 PM
You still didn't answer the question, or are you afraid to? Were not mad at you, just amused since you have to hide behind a fake name.
B.S. Buster January 19, 2014 at 01:01 PM
What question not answered? I already said I have no reason to run against politicians I have no issue with. The real question is why don't you and others that have very vocal disagreements with the sitting politicians cry for change, but don't run? I haven't asked for change. You and your group have....so why don't you run?
Victor Fischer January 19, 2014 at 01:23 PM
Thank you Kerry. Mr. B.S. is all talk and we are having loads of fun pulling his strings. He thinks that he makes us mad, but just the opposite. Up until now myself, and maybe many others had no real reason to get involved, but when $21 million of possible tax dollars are being leveled against a project not presented to the people of Lemont, then we get involved. How's that for a straight answer B.S. As for running for office, waiting for an opening on the board.
B.S. Buster January 19, 2014 at 01:38 PM
Thanks for the entertainment.... A gift that keeps on giving! Why would I care? I have no need or interest in running. I have no beef with those that currently serve. So are you waiting for an opening? Like one quits or dies... Or an election where you run against one of them?
Victor Fischer January 19, 2014 at 01:45 PM
Now you are really showing your intelligence with your last question.
B.S. Buster January 19, 2014 at 01:50 PM
I have no idea of your intentions....thanks for the fun!!
Hank Olenick January 19, 2014 at 02:17 PM
The election was last year; this is now. The Board kept this secret until after the candidate filing period. If it had been news before then, who knows how the election would have turned out? The actions of the presiding board have probably guaranteed there won't be any more uncontested elections. We are practicing representative democracy; voting is just one aspect of it. So is disagreeing with apologists and defenders of the indefensible behavior of the Mayor and Village Trustees. Are we supposed to vote and then go mind our own business and keep quiet? Ain't how it works in America -- ESPECIALLY if you disagree with the direction of your Dear Leaders.
B.S. Buster January 19, 2014 at 02:29 PM
How's that pot farm idea downtown coming Jesse/Hank? Better than your $100mil bridge to nowhere?
JOEL WHITEHOUSE January 19, 2014 at 02:41 PM
For B.S. From the BGA. The Better Government Association’s mission is to work for “integrity, transparency, and accountability in government by exposing corruption and inefficiency; identifying and advocating effective public policy; and engaging and mobilizing the electorate to achieve authentic and responsible reform”. — Have Brian explain this to you.
B.S. Buster January 19, 2014 at 02:45 PM
Investigate...there's that truth and evidence part! They will not mount your political vendetta for you. Why don't you give them a call?
JOEL WHITEHOUSE January 20, 2014 at 09:06 AM
J.V. HAVE BRIAN EXPLAIN THE BGA TO YOU.
B.S. Buster January 20, 2014 at 09:18 AM
>> The Investigative Unit looks into allegations of waste, fraud and corruption in city, county, suburban and state government, and the results are made public through partnerships with local media. The BGA’s partners include: The New York Times through the Chicago News Cooperative, Chicago Sun-Times, Crain's Chicago Business, and the Chicago television affiliates of ABC, CBS and FOX. BGA journalistic investigations are guided by the newly adopted BGA Guidelines for Investigations and Oversight Protocols.
B.S. Buster January 20, 2014 at 09:20 AM
That's what your paper tiger does. Investigative reporting. Means truth and evidence. Much higher standard than mouthing off here
B.S. Buster January 20, 2014 at 09:26 AM
>> The Policy Advocacy Unit builds on the results of the BGA investigations to propose policy solutions to corruption, inefficiency, lack of accountability and waste in government. In 2010, the BGA Policy Unit is focusing on issues such as streamlining government, TIFs and judicial reform.
B.S. Buster January 20, 2014 at 09:28 AM
Here's the part that might help us....training citizens to gather facts and evidence, not unfounded allegations >> The Citizen Watchdog Training Unit encourages and teaches citizens to monitor and report on their local governments, working with BGA investigators and editors. Trainings will take place throughout the state, particularly in underserved communities.

j.v. I see your up early.
B.S. Buster January 20, 2014 at 09:56 AM
8am isn't very early for people that actually do stuff. Successful people do more before 9am than others do in a complete day
B.S. Buster January 20, 2014 at 09:58 AM
And Andy Shaw is just a reporter and only deals with freedom Of information act stuff, just like you. You should engage someone with real subpoena powers, like Lisa Madigan or Anita Alvarez
JOEL WHITEHOUSE January 20, 2014 at 10:23 AM
j.v. -I will graciously forward you comments to Andy, and hope those behind the "Let us Vote" movement give him a jingle or drop him a note at "bettergov.org". Again, remember the BGA's mission, (as hopefully explained to you by Brian),“INTEGRITY, TRANSPARENCY, and ACCOUNTABILITY in government by exposing corruption and inefficiency; identifying and advocating EFFECTIVE public policy; and engaging and mobilizing the electorate to achieve authentic and responsible reform”. Nice chatting with you--- have a great day.
B.S. Buster January 20, 2014 at 10:40 AM
I'm sure Andy will explain to you what they do and how they operate. Their own website states 270 investigations since 2009, resulting in 70 reforms.....in what's arguably the most corrupt state in the union....you should engage Lisa Madigan or Anita Alvarez to get real subpoena power..... Of course any of them will actually investigate, and not blindly pursue your political vendetta
