Veterans Warned of Email Scam

Veterans are being warned about an email scam that is specifically targeting disabled veterans.

The emails appear to be coming from the Defense Finance and Accounting Service and use a .mil email address, but according to the National Veterans Affairs and Rehabilitation Commission the emails are fraudulent.

The emails attempt to solicit personal information from those who receive VA disability compensation and promise special funds from the Internal Revenue Service, according to a news release from U.S. Rep. Judy Biggert.

The American Legion offers these tips to avoid becoming involved in fraudulent schemes. Taxpayers should beware of any of the following:

• Fictitious claims for refunds or rebates based on false statements of entitlement to tax credits.

• Emails from unfamiliar senders asking for personal information.

• Internet solicitations that direct individuals to toll-free numbers and then solicit Social Security numbers or other personal information

Anyone who believes that someone has used their Social Security number fraudulently should notify the IRS immediately and fill out the IRS Identity Theft Affidavit, Form 14039, according to the news release.  Learn more about identity theft from the IRS.
