Lemont's 'Green Home' Hits Market for $550K

The state-of-the-art, 2,565-square-foot home—located at 12670 Briarcliffe Drive—will be featured next year in the television series "Built to Last."

Lemont's "Green Home," the house selected to be featured on the television show "Built to Last," has officially hit the market.

The five-bedroom, 2,565-square-foot home—located at 12670 Briarcliffe Drive, just off 127th Street—is listed for $550,000, according to the Chicago Regional Council of Carpenters' Labor and Management Committee.

A portion of the proceeds will benefit charities, which will be announced in the near future, according to a press release.

The Briarcliffe subdivision was selected by the council last year to be featured in the second season of "Built to Last," a "docu-reality" show that features residential and commercial construction projects from the ground up.

"Our goal with building the 'Green Home' is to be the industry leader when it comes to construction of new homes that are built for energy efficiency and optimum performance," said Carpenters' President Frank Libby. "We maintain the most advanced training program, producing skilled tradesmen who are properly prepared to meet today's energy-efficient needs."

The "Green Home" is LEED-certified (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design), meaning it was built in a way that reduces the negative impacts of buildings on occupants and the environment in five general categories: sustainable site planning; safeguarding water and water efficiency; energy efficiency and renewable energy; conservation of materials and resources; and indoor environmental quality.

The home features an open floor plan, multizone mechanicals, energy-efficient appliances, solar panels, a rainwater retention system, and a dashboard of residential controls to regulate heating, lighting, ventilation, air conditioning, appliances, security and other systems.

The property is listed by Debbie Prodehl of Coldwell Banker Honig-Bell in Homer Glen.

“The 'Green Home’ is an attractively unique, functional home and unlike anything else we have ever listed in the area,” Prodehl said. “The carpenters have built this home seeking LEED Platinum status, which is the highest level of designation possible when certified by the U.S. Green Building Council ... Combining the potential for cost savings with a reduced environmental impact and all the bells and whistles of sophisticated technology, this is a must-see for anyone interested in the latest and greatest in home building."

Last year, Susan Shelley, executive producer of "Built to Last," said the carpenters union “did an extensive search,” found Lemont and then looked for a subdivision.

Briarcliffe was chosen for its aesthetics and its proximity to tollways and public transportation, said Anthony Janowski, director of sustainability/marketing for the union.

"Built to Last" is aired through Lakeshore Public Television, which brings "PBS television and original programming to viewers in the lakeshore region of Northwest Indiana and Chicagoland."

Lakeshore Public Television airs in more than 200 communities, according to the Built to Last website. In Lemont, programs air on Comcast Channel 21.

Lissa Druss Christman, a spokesperson for the Chicago Regional Council of Carpenters, said construction of the Green Home will be completed this fall. The show will air in early 2013.
