Lemont Woman Takes on Stair Challenge to Raise Money for Children's Hospital

One woman's trying time has led to a tradition of giving back.

Lauren Camer's son spent the first week of his life in the neonatal intensive care unit at Lurie's Children Hospital.

But he came home healthy.

"But not everybody gets to say that," Camer said.

She and a group of 16 women are doing what they can to show support for the hospital that helped her son—and so many other children. The team will tackle the Aon building's 80 stories, in the company's 17th annual Step Up for Kids 2014. Participants gather pledges and raise funds before tackling 1,643 steps on Jan. 26. Proceeds go to Ann & Robert H. Lurie Children's Hospital of Chicago.

The women of Camer's "Team High and Tight" have garnered $4,085 in support as of Jan. 20.

The event raises money for K.I.D.S.S. for Kids, an affiliated organization of Lurie Children's, and a longtime supporter of its Family Services Department. Family Services provide patients with specialized support from child life specialists, art therapists, social workers, clergy, educational volunteers, and peer groups such as ParentWISE.

"Team High and Tight has committed to this 80 story climb for three years now, and I don't see it stopping any time soon," Camer said.
