Lemont Girl Scouts Tackle Sock Drive Challenge, Surpass Goal

Troop 259 from River Valley School collected nearly 1,944 pairs of socks to donate to local families in need.

Last year, Lemont Girl Scout Troop 259 might have topped their goal of collecting 900 pairs of socks, but they weren't about to stop there.

The girls set this year's target at 1,500 pairs—but at drive's end, happily announced they had collected a total of 1,944 pairs for Lemont families in need.

The "Socks for the Sole" drive began in October, and the fourth-grade girls collected donations through drop-off locations, door-to-door visits, and in-person encouragement at stores around town.

"These girls continue to amaze me," said troop leader Robyn Horn. "They have such big hearts and always go above and beyond to help the community. They love helping others and always continue to push forward to reach a higher goal each time."

Earlier in the drive, when it appeared the girls might not meet their goal, they came together and rallied.

"This time their tenacity showed," Horn said. "We started off slow and thought we would never make it to 1, 500, but they pushed forward. That's how they are.

"This group of girls follow their hearts and that usually puts them in the right direction."
