Lemont Girl Scouts Power Up Battery Drive

The girls collected nearly 700 pounds of batteries from mid-November through May 4.

Lemont Girl Scout Junior Troop 88 recently earned their Bronze Award medals for their 6-month long battery recycling drive.  The fourth- and fifth-grade scouts from three different area schools, worked together to collect a total of 672 pounds of alkaline, dry cell, and cell phone batteries for recycling. The Bronze Award is a leadership adventure and the highest honor a Girl Scout Junior can achieve.

Troop 88 recently completed a study of energy and conservation called "Get Moving", in which they learned about ways to conserve energy in their homes and communities. This study of recycling and energy use inspired the battery recycling service project.  The project fulfilled two of the tenants of the Girl Scout Law: "Use Resources Wisely" and "Make the World a Better Place".

The girls contacted local businesses and community centers, including Lemont Library, Lemont Park District, the Village of Lemont and numerous local schools and churches for assistance with their project.

Each girl maintained at least one battery recycling collection location from mid-November through May 1.  On May 4 the girls met to tally their collection, and they were thrilled with the results.  The group wishes to thank all those in the community that contributed to their drive and assisted in their efforts.  The batteries will be brought to Batteries Plus location for recycling. The same troop lent a hand at Lemont's Spring Recycling day on April 12 at the Metra Station, where they collected food pantry donations and learned about various recycling methods for paper, bicycles, paint, oil and electronics.

The seven fifth-graders in the troop will advance to the Girl Scout Cadette rank at the Lemont Girl Scoutsbridging ceremony, scheduled for May 14th.
