Lemont Preschoolers Make Fundraising for St. Jude as Easy as 1, 2, 3 (Wheelers)

Happy Hands preschoolers aimed at raising $4,000 for St. Jude's—but more than doubled that.

Students at Happy Hands Methodist Preschool in Lemont, recently learned a lesson in cycling safety, and felt the joy of raising money for a good cause during the preschool’s annual St. Jude’s Trike-A-Thon.

The event involved nearly 70 students from the preschool, ages two, three, four and five, each with the opportunity to ride with their own classmates.  On bike day, children brought their bikes and helmets from home for their 10 minutes of race time on the lap course, just outside the preschool doors.  Moms, dads and teachers joined in on the excitement by helping students count their laps.

“As parents and educators, we need to instill a giving nature in our children and students for those less fortunate..." said Julie Phillips, director of Happy Hands Preschool.

School staff hoped to raise $4,000—but the students surpassed that goal, bringing in a total of $10,212.

The Trike-A-Thon at Happy Hands Preschool is a fun, two-week-long safety curriculum and fundraising program that supports St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital by raising money for research and treatments.  The program teaches the children valuable riding safety lessons.  At the end of the week, children bring their bikes and helmets to school to celebrate the lessons they have learned.

Happy Hands is partnering with St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, the leader in the fight against catastrophic childhood diseases such as leukemia, brain tumors and sickle cell disease.  It is the only pediatric research center where families never pay for treatment not covered by insurance and no child is denied treatment because of the family’s inability to pay.  Sponsors for the Happy Hands Trike-A-Thon can also show their support with online donations by visiting stjude.org/trike.
