Breast cancer is the second most common cancer among women, second only to skin cancer. Each year in the US, over 200,000 new cases of breast cancer are diagnosed and over 40,000 women are expected to die. For 25 years, the National Breast Cancer Awareness Month (NBCAM) campaign has provided education about the importance of early detection through mammography screening and breast examination.
According to the NBCAM, after the age of 20, women should perform breast self exams, and women between 20 and 30 should receive clinical exams every three years. The NBCAM encourages women to become more familiar with their bodies, adhere to screening guidelines and know the common risk factors associated with breast cancer. When caught early, odds of survival are high, with 5-year survival rates as high as 98%. More information on risk factors can be found on the American Cancer Society website at: www.cancer.org
National Breast Cancer Awareness Month has been a very successful campaign, since 1985 the number of women having mammograms in the United States has doubled. There are a number of organizations that offer support networks and educational materials; information on early detection, the newest treatment methods, research and cancer survivor resources.

Exercise Tips
Healthy Body
Fall is a great time to start a fitness program and to start creating new, healthy habits for the upcoming
winter months and holiday season. Take advantage of the change of seasons and the renewed sense of
beginning again. It’s like going back to school ─ your own personal fitness and exercise school! Here are
a few tips to help you get started with falling into shape this fall.
Get outside and enjoy the cooler temperatures and crisp, fresh air. Walking, hiking and bicycling are
excellent ways to build your cardiovascular health. Discover new park trails or if you are near a lake, try
kayaking or canoeing for an excellent whole-body workout. Or stay close to home and get some exercise
from raking leaves or doing some fall outdoor yard work, it’s a great way to increase your heart and
respiratory rate while burning a few calories.
Many new classes start in the fall at your local gyms and fitness centers, so why not check them out and
see what intrigues you! Perhaps kick-boxing, tai chi, belly or tap dancing?
