Weekend To Do List: Sept. 17-19

Enjoy downtown deals, the opening of the Center for the Arts and plenty of kids activities this weekend in Lemont.

Friday

Birthday Celebration for H.A. Rey

Kids ages 4 to 8 are invited to the Lemont Public Library, 50 East Wend St., from 4 p.m. to 5 p.m. to celebrate the birthday of Curious George author H.A. Rey. The party includes cake, games and storytelling.

Saturday

Stroll Through Historic Downtown Lemont

Restaurants and businesses throughout the downtown area are hosting an afternoon of free food and special discounts from noon to 4 p.m. The event is free of charge, but donation boxes for the Lemont Food Pantry will be set up at each location.

Grand Opening of the Lemont Center for the Arts

The Lemont Arts and Culture Commission is celebrating the opening of its new Center for the Arts with a ribbon cutting ceremony, activities, live music and refreshments. The event will be held from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. at 1243 State St., with a more formal artists' reception from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m.

Bike Rodeo

Kids of all ages are invited to decorate their bikes and ride in the Lemont Park District's Bike Rodeo. The parade will begin at 9 a.m. at Brown Park and will commence to Virginia Reed Park, where snacks, pony rides and games will start at 10 a.m.

Self Protection for Women

The Lemont Park District is offering a special self-protection workshop for adult and teenage women at 9:30 a.m. at the CORE. Students will be taught self-defense techniques and will be given information on dating violence and crime. The cost is $75.

Wheaton Warrenville South Classic

The Lemont High School girls volleyball team will play in the championship bracket starting at 8 a.m. The tournament is put on by Wheaton Warrenville South High School, located at 1993 Tiger Trail in Wheaton.

Sunday

Chico Smorgallees Jazz Ensemble

The Sunday Night Big Band Series continues at This Must Be the Place, 206 Main St., with the Chico Smorgallees Jazz Ensemble. The show starts at 6 p.m. Preferred seating is available for $10. A dinner/ticket special is also available for $25.
