Week in Review, May 16-22: Central School Closes, Resident Injured in Home Invasion

Monday, May 16

In a unanimous vote Monday night, the Lemont-Bromberek Combined School District 113A voted to close Central School and approve a reorganization plan for the 2011-2012 school year.

Lemont High School's three-time state champion cheerleading squad and several students from the Future Business Leaders of America were honored last week in a special assembly for the school's state title winners.

The Lemont Area Historical Society hosted re-enactors for a special Civil War program to commemorate the war's 150th anniversary.

Tuesday, May 17

Old Quarry Middle School students participated in artist Matt Lamb's program, "Umbrellas for Peace." The class paraded around the school with umbrellas they had painted with personal messages or symbols.

Wednesday, May 18

Approximately 250 students will be without bus service next year after the District 113A Board of Education approved the elimination of bus services to four areas no longer deemed hazardous.

Thursday, May 19

Four Lemont High School seniors were honored last week as they signed letters of intent to collegiate athletic programs.

A Lemont woman was attacked by an unknown male offender during a home invasion last week in Rolling Meadows.

The Lemont Junior Woman's Club held its second annual Amazing Race event to raise money for their many charitable efforts.

Friday, May 20

Seven-year-old Abby Beranek, a Lemont Daisy Girl Scout, was honored as a "young hero" last week by the Lemont Fire Protection District's Board of Trustees. Abby helped direct her family to safety when a dryer caught fire in their home last month.

The Lemont High School Drama Club hosted its annual Senior Social last week, which included a special showing of the spring musical, Singin' in the Rain.

Zoning issues continue to plague the development of an ethnic deli in unincorporated Lemont.

The varsity girls soccer team beat Oak Forest by a score of 3-0 in their regional match Friday.

Saturday, May 21

Moving toward sectionals, the varsity girls soccer team will rely heavily on the talents of junior Shannon Briggs.

Sunday, May 22

A plan by Gov. Pat Quinn to pay back state debt would eliminate income tax payments to local governments. The proposal would cost the village up to $1.3 million, Mayor Brian Reaves said.
