Snapshot: Boy Scouts Post Nearly 300 Flags Around Lemont for 9/11 Anniversary

Members of Troop 49 began installing American flags at dawn Sunday in honor of the Sept. 11, 2001 terrorist attacks.

Boy Scout Troop 49 marked the 10th anniversary of 9/11 on Sunday by posting more than 280 American flags in front of homes and throughout the community.

According to Troop 49 Scoutmaster Pat Troy, the boys install flags around Lemont on five of the nation's flag holidays. Residents and businesses can register to participate throughout the year, he said.

Because Sept. 11 has fallen on weekdays when school is in session, the scouts have been unable to post flags in recent years. On Sunday, however, the boys set out at dawn to deliver the flags along 10 different routes, and returned again at dusk to take them down.

Assistant Scoutmaster Colleen Leahy said of the tradition, "It's really moving to drive down the different streets and see rows of American flags. We do it multiple times a year, and we'll keep doing it because it's an important contribution to the Lemont community."
