Patch Picks: Teen Activities

Teens looking for something to do can find a variety of possibilities in Lemont.

Every Thursday, Patch will run a weekly feature called Patch Picks, highlighting editor and reader picks of great local businesses, destinations, services, organizations, ways to spend a day off, and more.

You’ll find useful lists to help you, your family, friends, and significant others find the best places for everything from Sunday brunch to New Year’s Eve celebrations, pumpkin patches, date night destinations, florists, girlfriend nights out, kids party places, parks and more.

For this week, we're looking at activities for teens.

Teen Fun

1. A Fighting Chance Class for Preteens and Teens on Self Protection

Sponsored by the Lemont Junior Woman's Club, The and the , the class will be held from 8:45 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Saturday, at Lemont Village Hall, 418 Main St. This is a proactive, hands on program that concentrates on the prevention, escape and survival of abduction in an empowering manner for 9-15 year olds. The fee is $35 and includes lunch. For more information, call (630) 243-1647.

2. Teen Advisory Group

Students in sixth grade through senior year of high school can help the Lemont Public Library make important decisions on upcoming teen events and other library concerns. Meetings are held from 5 to 6 p.m. the third Thursday every month. The next meeting will be held Oct. 27. Visit the Lemont Public Library website for more information.

3. Teen Improv Workshop

Join the Improv Commandos for a two hour workshop on the basics of improv performance from 7 to 9 p.m. Friday, Nov. 18, at the Lemont Public Library. The last half hour will give attendees a chance to show parents and friends their new found skills with a mini-performance using the comedy skills they just learned. Snacks will be provided. 4. Lemont Juniorettes

The service organization for girls ages 12 to 18. meets monthly to discuss and volunteer for various projects around the Lemont area including Hope's Closet, Breakfast with Santa, Ronald McDonald House and other projects associated with the Lemont Junior Woman's Club. Girls also hold fundraisers and social activities throughout the year. For more information about the Lemont Juniorettes, contact Clare Korte at (630) -257-5177 or Therese George at (630) 257-5662. Meetings are held from 7 to 7:45 p.m. the second Tuesday of each month at the Lemont Police Station, 14600 127th St.

5. American Heart Association Certification Program

The Lemont Junior Woman’s Club hosts an American Heart Association offers a certification program which covers CPR, choking, and the use use of the AED for adults and children. The program is offered at various times through the year for ages 11 to 16.  While the 2011 classes have ended, check the Lemont Junior Woman’s Club website for 2012 dates.
