Lemont's Jonathan Pacheco Makes School History at State Tennis Finals

The junior became the first boys tennis player from Lemont High School to advance to the second day of competition at the IHSA State Finals in Chicago.

Lemont High School junior Jonathan Pacheco made school history Thursday, becoming the first boys tennis player to advance to the second day of competition of the IHSA State Finals.

Pacheco split four matches over a two-day period at the tournament, which is being hosted by Districts 211 and 214 in Chicago's northwest suburbs.

On Thursday, Pacheco opened state finals play by defeating De La Salle's Larry Muse in straight sets (6-0, 6-0). In the second round, he faced off against Cameron Bagheri of Lake Forest. Pacheco dropped the first set by a score of 6-2, and was leading the second set 2-0 before Bagheri retired with an injury.

Pacheco qualified for the state finals by reaching the semifinals of the IHSA Joliet West Sectional on May 21. He is an All-South Suburban Conference performer who helped lead head coach Jon DeGuzman's team to a fourth straight team competition.
